5 things I love about my studio space

Over the past 5 years I have had 4 different studio set ups in different parts of my home. Each has served it’s purpose, allowing me to be the artist that I needed to be at that exact time. This most recent set up is by far my favourite. With large windows, a couch and ample space, I have all that I need to keep creating. Oh but the best part is that I have a door! (which I did not have in my previous studio space) so this is heaven to me!

After trying many different layouts and products I have picked my top 5 ‘things’ that help inspire me and keep my creativity growing. I highly advise you to add some of these to your own space.

Here are the 5 things that keep me coming back to my studio space and fall in love with it every time.

  1. Inspirational wall – The focal point of the studio is this inspirational wall, filled with magazine cuttings, posters, photographs and my artwork. A lot of the designs are cut outs from frankie magazine and flow magazine. I like to look at this wall when I feel stuck  in my design process. It reminds me of how art makes everything so much more beautiful. My favourite thing on this wall is the poster by Sarah Abbott – I have no idea what I’m doing.

  1. rotating tray – This Ikea product called SNUDDA was marketed as a food tray. However with all the art supplies I have, I thought this would work best to keep my pencils at arms reach. It works wonders in my studio because it gives me the chance to keep creating, without having to stop to pick up another art supply somewhere else in the room.

  1. My Shop Canvas lamp – probably the most useful of all products, this desk lamp has many unique features. First of all it can be used as a tripod, either with the wooden base or you can attach it anywhere you want on your desk. You then place your phone in the clamp above, and tweak the angle to photograph or record your work in progress. This has really changed the game for me, because it allows me share my creative process without having to constantly set up a tripod and light source. Even without all those features, the design is so sleek and beautiful and it matches with the rest of the decor in my space.

  1. Plants. Plants. & more Plants. – I started introducing plants into my space about 2 years ago, and I am never going back to life with no plants! They bring so much life into my studio and a lot of colour. I like that they remind me to slow down, and that growth takes time. New leaves take months to grow, so why are we giving ourselves pressure to create so much so quickly?

  1. My book shelves and storage unit from Design Post Ghana – This custom piece was one of my first purchases for my space. I knew I needed a lot of storage for my art supplies, products and books. With inbuilt lighting and large space for my books, I love to get lost in these shelves and find inspiration. The storage side fits all my studio needs. It stores more of my art supplies, educational books, stock of my work and much more!

I am a big believer that the space you are in affects your mood and your productivity. This is why I spent extra time and energy to design my perfect studio. Previously used as a playroom and bedroom, I took over this space with the hopes of creating a more sustainable art practice. I am beyond blessed to have such an inspiring work space.

A little friendly disclaimer: Although this blog post contains links to outside sources, these are NOT paid partnerships of any kind. These are my personal recommendations – things that I love having in my studio because I genuinely find them useful.

Enjoy!
